Kitty in BootsCertainly the big news of the day for Baba Yaga was that of the discovery of a new Beatrix Potter story, to be published in September with illustrations by Quentin Blake. The story is about a ladylike black cat who sneaks way from home to dress as a country gent and indulge her love of hunting. Listening to Patricia Routledge describing the “feisty as blazes” Kitty, I was reminded of Kate Bernheimer’s essay ‘The Fairy Way of Reading (and Writing): an Introduction‘. In it she writes that:

In my story, every cross-dressing mammal is as real as a girl as a cat as a bird as a chicken-legged house as a donkey-skinned girl on the run from a lecherous father…
